Harry's First Christmas in His Forever Home!

It's pictures like this one that just warm your heart! We've done updates on Harry (Rusty when he was at our shelter) before, but we just had to share this one. Harry is an older guy that wasn't in very good shape when we first saw him. He had skin and hair loss issues and problems with his eyes. He honestly didn't have much of a chance to be adopted. Tracey, one of our volunteers, didn't want his last days to be spent in a shelter without a family. She contacted rescues hoping to save him. Miracles do sometimes happen and Harry was taken in by Eileen and Young at Heart Pet Rescue. From there he was adopted into the wonderful home where this picture was taken. Thank you so much to everyone that has a part in making stories like this happen!

I would like to apologize for our lack of posts lately. I kind of got away from using this blog for a while. We weren't getting a whole lot of traffic on it and it was a little frustrating. We were putting most of our energy into our page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/4pawpals and recently started a website http://www.pawpalsofclintoncounty.org. It looks like they have added a couple of features to allow this blog to be a little more like a website, so I might mess with this a little over the next week or so and see what I can do with it. It takes more spare time than I have to manage several different sites, so another apology in advance if the results are disappointing.
Thanks so much to all of you that have followed this blog! It was our first attempt to promote Paw Pals beyond our page on Petfinder and it has been fun. Several volunteers came to us after reading about us here and have made a huge difference in the lives of the pets at our shelter. That's what it's all about so it's definitely been worth it!

Wrigley, a Cattle Dog mix, was adopted from the Cinton County Humane Society in February. He stopped by today for a visit. Wrigley, now named Buddy, looked great! His Mom and Dad told us he has never met a stranger- human or canine. During Buddy's visit, his parents met a Pomeranian named Foxy. It was love at first sight so now Buddy has a new sister to love.

We adopted Abraham from you on Saturday, May 1st. His new name is Sam and he is having a wonderful time in his new home with us. AJ, aka Fluffy, Finds Her Forever Home with Her Foster Family

Fluffy was officially adopted today by her foster dad, Tom Brinker. Tom is a regular volunteer on Sundays who helps walk, brush, and bathe dogs. Tom has fostered several other cats who have been adopted through the website, but Fluffy was different. She just "fit in" perfectly with the rest of his crew. The Clinton County Humane Society is looking for a "Spokesdog" and "Spokescat" for 2010. The winning dog and cat will appear in ads for the shelter, a 2011 calendar and appear at various shelter events throughout the year. To enter your dog and/or cat, please send a $25 donation per animal (to help their fellow animals at the shelter), a picture of your pet and a "bio" telling us all about him or her. The deadline for entries is Sunday, January 31. Entries will be narrowed down to 12 per category and winners and runners-up will be picked on Saturday, February 6. All 12 finalists will be included in the 2011 calendar! Please send your donation, pet picture(s) and bio(s) to the shelter at 825 Izaak Walton Drive, Frankfort, Indiana, 46041. Time for another Winnie-Gram. Becky had been sick, and when I came to bed one evening last week, here is what I found. Winnie had taken over my side (she ALWAYS has to use pillow) and that was that. I ended up sleeping in the guest room. We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful dog... well, as long as this doesn't happen too often!

Tracey Wojciechowski Neblett sent us an update on Shallia, one of the dogs she drove to a rescue in Wisconsin. Thanks Tracey!

Shallia was the beautiful white shepherd that was picked up as a stray. She was timid and fearful when she came in, but really started doing well at the shelter. From the Heart Rescue in Wisconsin (a new rescue that works with Rescue a German Shepherd-who rescued Madison) agreed to work with Shallia (now called Shay) and they are fostering her until she finds a forever home. She has five fenced acres to run in, gets along really well with the other dogs, is happy and having a really good time!

Lou finds his forever friend at Critterfest in Lafayette. Abby, a young husky mix, who was found as a stray was lucky enough to be adopted by Lou and his wife. Paw Pals volunteers felt fortunate to have four adoptions as a result of this off-site adoption. Three dogs and one cat now have a place of their own to call home.

Chloe, formerly April, is in Heaven on Earth

Just wanted to provide you with an update and some photos of Chloe (formerly April). She is adjusting beautifully and it’s as though she has always been with us. She is very cuddle-y and sticks pretty close by to me and my husband. She loves to go on walks, to the bark park, for rides in the car, and to Puppy Playground. She’s charmed the clients at my office and someone always asks where she is if she doesn’t come with me for the day. Chloe loves her big brother (our other beautiful “baby”) and they play all the time…it is so sweet to watch them together!

Thank you so much for having rescued her; if you hadn’t, we would never have had the good fortune of adding her to our family. We can’t imagine being without her!

*Chloe was minutes away from being euthanized when Paw Pals was called to help save her. Thank God for everyone who came together to help this girl.

Gizmo Grateful to Have a New Home

The kids and I absolutely adore him. He is such a sweetie pie. He took to the house and the kids right away. He looks and sounds much better. I made an appointment for him to see our vet next week. I bought him some canned food and he has been eating and drinking without any problems. He is definitely a social eater as you mentioned. I'll post another update a little later. We love him!!! *Gizmo had an upper-respiratory infection/virus, but his family didn't let that stop them from giving this great boy a new home. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Last Sept. we adopted Winnie, a Lab mix after losing our beloved Dalmatian named Disney. Disney was 13 and had battled congestive heart failure for several years. She passed away Aug. 25th, and by mid September, although still reeling from the loss,... I felt the need so strongly to give "someone" a new home... We are so blessed by Winnie... The grandkids adore her and she loves to romp with them and let them lavish her with love... She is beside me always, and will hardly let me go anywhere that she doesn't at least get to ride along. Here is a picture of Winnie playing with a treat before attacking it!

I adopted "Taser", formerly Rena, in March of 2008. When I first saw her I fell in love with her. She was a beautiful puppy, and still is. However, she was extremely scared of people, I can only assume that before she was rescued she was abused. Today though, Taser, is one of the friendliest dogs I have ever seen. She will go up to anyone and will vie for as much attention as they will give her. She is also a very well behaved dog, she rarely barks, growls, and has never snapped or bitten anyone. Everytime Taser meets someone new, she is told that she is the cutest puppy ever. As I am typing this she is laying on the couch with her chin resting on my leg :-) There are more pics of her on my profile! Thanks CCHS!

We adopted Sam (formerly "Shadow") from the Clinton County Humane Society in April of 2007. For reasons still unknown to me, Sam was on his third stay at the shelter and unab...le to find a permanent home. He joined our cat Savannah (formerly “April” adopted from CCHS in October 2006) and quickly became a loyal member of the family. Sam makes us laugh daily and appreciate the simple things in life – a roof overhead, food on the table (or in the bowl) and unconditional love. He’s definitely got a sense of humor and has taught us the importance of kindness and a second, or, third chance in life. Although we’ve since moved from the area, I check back every now and then on CCHS animals and activities. Many thanks to such a wonderful and caring staff – Sam and Savannah have found a forever family!

I adopted Oreo (Harpo) in July of 07. He was just a baby and he had the biggest feet I had ever seen on a 7 month old kitten. He grew to be a big boy! We have moved a couple times ...since I got him and he adjusted well with the moves. He is the biggest... cuddler ever. He sleeps next to me and only me every night and he is spoiled rotten. I would definitely adopt another kitten from the CCHS in a heartbeat.

All 3 of them came from the Clinton County Humane Society. They were watching the Colts/Dolphins game, and didn't seem too interested in either team. They do look comfortable though, don't they?

Paw Pals Saves Many Lives Including Gracie's Life

Just wanted to thank you again for Gracie – almost 7 months later, she’s become an integral part of our family and enjoys being an extremely spoiled cat. I thought you’d enjoy this picture – she and Chandler have become very close – and she does things with him (like lay like she’s doing in this picture) that she won’t do with others. She’s really enjoyed being out on the screened in porch over the summer to watch birds and chase bugs. She goes in and out of the house all day long…. And you can see that she’s not too happy about the chilly morning temperatures that have now set in….

*Gracie was placed in foster care when she started getting an upper-respiratory infection. Paw Pals paid for all her medications until she was well enough to be adopted.

A note from Mick's new home in Canada!

Well, what can I say. It was a very long drive to pick up this pup, but well worth it. I have changed his name to Alex and he seems to like it. He was great in the car even though it was a very long ride from Frankfort to Windsor, Ontario (12 hour round trip). Alex seems to be adjusting well with his new friend Finnagan. The first night back he found the pool by running across the solar blanket. No harm done, but now he is aware of it. I would like to thank the Clinton County Humane Society for waiting for me to arrive. I rolled into town at 6pm and they close at 4pm.
I have been sleep deprived by this dog, but now he seems to be doing fine, playing ball and all those puppy things. Thanks so much, eh !

Our Second Adoption to Canada

Mick, a young border collie/Aussie mix, only had to wait a little over a week to find his new forever home thanks to petfinder! His new owner drove from Ontario on Saturday to adopt Mick after seeing him on our website. Mick reminded him of his dog who recently passed away. It was love at first sight. Mick was giving him kisses and jumped right in his car which is a good thing with his long trip home. His new owner promised to send photos once Mick gets settled in Ontario.

Going the Extra Mile!

These two lucky dogs were rescued over the weekend! One of our dedicated volunteers contacted the rescues to see if they would help, made arrangements when they were accepted, then proceeded to drive ll hours round trip to deliver them to their destinations. Eden (left) went to Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of Illinois in Joliet, and Shailla (right) went to Rescue A German Shepherd (RAGS) in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. Our volunteer gets embarassed when people fuss over her efforts, so I won't name her. She just needs to know that we appreciate her very much! She has already made several trips like these, and thinks nothing of it. Thanks again Ms. Anonymous!

Marlo and Spencer Hanging Out Together!

Some of you might remember Marlo, the beautiful collie mix, who ended up at the Clinton County Humane Society as a stray last April. Well, boy did she hit the jackpot with her new family! Marlo was adopted at an off-site adoption event at the Carmel PetsMart in May. Here's an update from her Mom:

"Marlo is doing great, we just love her. It is so nice to have a dog that gets along with every other dog she meets. We found she doesn't like storms and likes to chew on things she shouldn't some times, like my favorite pair of shoes. She is learning and the few things she needs improvement on are no comparison to how much joy she brings us and how many things she doesn't need training on. Thank you for helping to make her a part of our lives."

Hi! Just wanted to give you an update on Ellie. We adopted her in April and she is the best dog I have ever had! She is so smart, she has learned many tricks without much effort from me to train her. She can sit, shake, lay, roll over, play dead, high-5, beg, catch, fetch, put her toys away, and much more. She is so eager to learn and to please us. She is great, and we absolutely do not know what we would do if she was not a member of our family. I want to thank you all so much for what you do for these animals, and I hope that our happy story inspires others to help!

Donnie Earns His Canine Good Citizen Award!

Donnie, a collie/retriever mix, is one shelter dog who has stolen the hearts of everyone he meets. His foster parents, Mick and Kendra, have been working with him on basic obedience commands and manners. This evening Donnie passed the test for a Canine Good Citizen! Sophie's Big Day!

Here is a picture of Sophie and her new family! She was adopted at the Carmel PetSmart today. Sophie came to our shelter as a stray with pups that were less than a week old. A couple of our volunteers, Rob and Tami, took them all in as fosters until the pups were old enough to be adopted. The pups went quickly. Sophie had to wait about a month until these nice people came along! You can't see it all in the picture, but the cart is loaded with new supplies for Sophie! It was a long day, and it looked like we weren't going to have any success until the last hour. Sophie found a home! We still took 7 other dogs back home, but they had a good day out of the shelter or their foster homes, and there was some interest in several of them that may pan out later. It would be nice if we could do these events more often, but they take a lot of work and time. If any of you are interested in helping with future events, let us know. Madison's Road Trip to Wisconsin!

Some of you may remember Madison. She was brought to the shelter as a stray. She was very scared, but she quickly became a favorite of some of the volunteers. Once she warmed up to you, she was very gentle and loyal. It was obvious that she had been a loved pet, but for some reason, she was never claimed. One of our volunteers, Tracey, searched for rescues that might take her. She found a German Shepherd rescue that wanted her. Just one catch. It was in Wisconsin! Tracey doesn't let things like this phase her and immediately made plans to drive Madison to the rescue. She made an appointment at the vet to make sure Madison had the proper shots to make the trip, and then they were both ready to go. Tracey's dad joined them along the way to keep them company. Tracey spent parts of Friday, Saturday, and early Sunday making the trip to Wisconsin and back. She still managed to show up at the shelter Sunday afternoon to help walk dogs for several hours! Now that's dedication! Thanks Tracey! We appreciate all you do to help our pets at the shelter!

Volunteers Make Dogs More Adoptable

Kendra has been working as a volunteer with several of our dogs at the shelter to make them more adoptable. In just a couple of sessions, she was able to teach Harley several basic commands using the clicker method and a few treats. The Starfish Story

Nearly everyone has already heard the Starfish Story in some form. I'm posting it because it sounds a lot like what we're trying to do sometimes. We often think we don't have enough money, time, volunteers, foster homes, etc. and we wonder if we're making a difference. Any time you feel that way, just read the story below and remember, we made a difference for that one!

One day a man was walking along the seashore. He noticed that during the night many seashells and starfish had washed upon the beach. Thoroughly enjoying the morning sun and cool sea air, the man walked for miles.

As he strolled along, he noticed a small figure dancing in the distance. It made him chuckle to think of someone celebrating life in such an uninhibited way. As he drew closer, however, it became apparent that the figure was not dancing. Instead, she seemed to be repeatedly performing some ritual.

He drew nearer still and noticed that the small figure was a child. She was methodically picking up starfish and tossing them into the surf. He paused for a moment, puzzled, then asked, "Why are you throwing these starfish?"

"It's high tide," she replied, "If I leave them on the beach, the sun will soon dry them and they will die. I am throwing them into the ocean so they can live." The man considered her actions, impressed with the child's thoughtfulness. Then he motioned up and down the miles of the beach. "There must be thousands of starfish along here," he said, "you cannot possibly make a difference."

The young girl stopped. Her face darkened. She chewed thoughtfully on her lower lip, "You're probably right," she said softly. She looked down at the sand. Then she leaned over, carefully picked up another starfish, pulled back and arched it gently into the sea.

With a tone of gentle defiance, she said, "But I made a difference for that one."

Foster Spotlight - Dyno! (Now Adopted!)

Some of you may remember Dyno from the shelter a couple of weeks ago. He was surrendered by his owners. He was frightened and confused, and didn't know why he was left there. He was starting to show some aggressive behavior, and some of the staff and volunteers were a little afraid of him. They just didn't understand him. Luckily, a couple of our volunteers who are familiar with Huskies took an interest in him. They visited him a couple of times at the shelter to work with him. Dyno took to them right away. He still wasn't doing too well around anyone else and was in danger of being euthanized, so they offered to take him home as a foster. This was the big break Dyno needed! In this video you can see just how happy he is and how far he has come! He is thriving in his foster home and is waiting for just the right family to adopt him. His next home will need to be forever, so his foster parents are making every effort to make sure any possible adopters understand the needs of a Husky. Thank you to Mick and Kendra for helping this guy out! This is another example of how important fostering can be.

Dyno has now been adopted! We will keep you posted on how he's doing in his new home as we get updates.

Three Lucky Dogs!

Many of our regular readers will see some familiar faces here. Meet Sugar, Max, and Milroy. All three of these wonderful dogs were fosters that ended up being adopted by their foster family. Sometimes the fosters just become such a part of the family, they are hard to give up. Sugar is a Shar-pei mix who ended up at the shelter when her owners couldn't take care of her.
After trying to find her a home, her foster family decided she was staying with them. That was more than a year ago. Recently, that same family brought home Max, a beautiful 9 year old Yellow Lab, who was surrendered by his owner. Max was extremely depressed in the shelter and wasn't eating well. Lou Ann took him home to foster and fell in love. He also joined the family. When Milroy, the 9 or 10 year old Beagle came to the shelter as a stray, Lou Ann came to the rescue again. A Beagle rescue had agreed to take Milroy, but Lou Ann and her husband fell in love with him before that could happen. As you can see from the pictures, these 3 lucky pups have it made! Max likes to twirl before he comes into the house. He's probably just trying to express his joy and appreciation for his family. Milroy had to try out every dog bed before deciding on just the right one. He also greets the family with a happy bark when they come home. Even Sugar, who is sometimes choosy about who she gets along with, seems to have taken to these boys.

Fostering is such a rewarding experience. These 3 may have never made it out of the shelter and into a loving family without a foster home willing to give them a chance. Their faces say it all. They appreciate every day with their new family. Thank you to Lou Ann and Denny for being such a loyal foster family for the many great animals at the shelter.

Offsite Adoption at the Hot Dog Festival

Here are a few pictures from our offsite adoption on Friday, 7/24 of the Hot Dog Festival. Thank you to Family Video for letting us use their lot and also for selling baked goods to benefit the Humane Society! One cat (Daisy) was adopted there and the other cat (Dapple) was adopted a little later at the shelter by a couple that had seen her. They also adopted a chihuahua that had just been surrendered and was very scared. These three adoptions made the day worth it. We got a few small donations and visited with some people, but finding homes for the pets is what it's all about.

Kermit's Happy Story!

Hi, Rick!

I have a Happy Story for the blog that is long overdue. Mick and I adopted Kermit (Jenny when she was in the shelter) on October 4, 2008. We saw Kermit's picture on Petfinder and were captivated with one of the pictures in which she was smiling with her mouth open, much in the way a Kermit the Frog puppet might look, and we kept referring to her picture as "Kermit the Dog." We went to the shelter to meet her. We didn't exactly hit it off with Kermit on our first visit. She was a handful on a leash-jumping, pulling, and scratching with her claws. And we weren't sure we were ready for a younger dog (she was around 4-5 months old and full of jump and bounce). But after discussing, we decided I should go back for a second visit to see Kermit, and on that second visit, we connected. After a third visit to make sure Kermit and our Husky would get along, we made it official and brought Kermit into our family.

But that's not the end of the story...We enrolled Kermit in a basic clicker training class, and we might as well have saved the enrollment fee. Kermit was a superstar! And she did so well socializing with the people and children accompanying their parents to the class that I decided to enroll Kermit for a Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog preparation course. On June 7, just a few weeks past what we would estimate to be her first birthday, Kermit and I drove to Indianapolis to take a shot at the obedience exams and passed the combined CGC/Therapy Dogs International exam together! She has a fancy certificate from the AKC recognizing her Canine Good Citizen achievement. And today, we received notice in the mail that Therapy Dogs International accepted her application to become an associate member. Kermit has her own photo ID badge, bandana, and collar tag identifying her as TDI therapy dog. We will be able to share her calming, loving influence with children and adults who need her special gift, and I'm looking forward to scheduling our first volunteer visit!

Kermit has been an amazing treasure. We're so thankful that we gave Kermit a second chance. And we hope that other potential adopters will realize that not every dog puts their best paw forward on the initial visit, and will consider returning for a second visit if they don't find what they expected the first time.

Big Girl's Update

Big Girl was adopted from us at an off-site adoption at the Carmel PetsMart in June. She was surrendered at seven years old to the Clinton County Humane Society because the family was moving. The following is an update from Big Girl's new family:
Attached is a picture of Big Girl. She's doing great. My Mom and Dad love her, so if you see any calm, low-maintenance dogs let me know. They had a ball with her when we brought her to Terre Haute for a visit at their house. She actually ran with Jack in their back yard, but only once. I think she spent all her energy! She worked my mom over with her sad brown eyes. We did discover she does not like thunder or fire works. She hides. Our vet says she needs to lose 10 lbs, so we're walking twice a day and cutting down the food intake. I'll keep you posted on her progress.

Jojo Finally Finds Her Forever Home!

This is Jojo, a beautiful beagle mix who had a sad start to life. Jojo was adopted from our shelter a couple of years ago. She was brought back for unknown reasons. Paw Pals sponsored her and got her spayed and into a foster home where she was quickly adopted again. That family's cats didn't like her so back to the shelter she came. We found another foster home for her, and Jojo found yet another home. Luck was still not on Jojo's side because that family returned her as well. We contacted Julie, Jojo's second foster mom to tell her Jojo was back at the shelter. She immediately agreed to foster her again. This time she was adopted by a wonderful young man named Ryan who loves her. Jojo finally has the happy ending she deserved all along. Now she is living the good life. We so appreciate the foster homes Jojo had that kept her from living in the shelter. Our foster homes are extremely valuable and needed! Thank you to Ryan who gave Jojo the home she craved. What a happy ending!!!

Frankie Finds a Happy Home!

I'm sure many of you have seen Scruffy on our website. He was brought to the shelter by his former owners in February when they were moving out of state and didn't want to take Scruffy with them. He became urgent recently because he was getting depressed at the shelter and not eating. Tracey, one of our wonderful volunteers, listed a story about Scruffy on her Facebook page. Friends started sharing Scruffy's story with their friends, and within a couple of days, Scruffy found his new family in Fort Wayne! He is living it up with a family who loves him, complete with two teenagers! He thinks it was worth the wait because they are spoiling him rotten. His new mom said he was so good at his first vet appointment, and he let his new doggie cousin, a cocker spaniel, jump all over him! He even got a new name: Frankie! He couldn't be happier! Thanks to Tracey, Frankie will have the happy home he deserved for so long! A huge thank you to Frankie's new family who saw him and realized he was just what they needed to make their family complete!

Some Quality Time for Truman!

Here is a short video of Truman being brushed last Sunday. Not only did he get a good brushing and lots of petting, he also had a nice long walk! As you can see from the video, handling a dog is sometimes a 2 person job. Some of them tend to be a little wiggly. We had plenty of help that day, so 5 others also got brushed! Bo's Long Journey Ends Happily!

Most of you remember Bo, the wonderful beagle with 2 cherry eyes. He came to the shelter in early March. He has had 3 surgeries on his eyes, and this week, he finally found what he has been waiting for...his forever home! We would like to thank Bo's foster mom, Julie, for working with him these past several weeks to help teach him house manners and for giving him the love he so deserved. Thanks also to the generous people who donate to Paw Pals so we can get great animals like Bo the veterinary care they need. We would especially like to thank Bo's new family for looking at shelters when they were ready to add a new family member. Here is an update on Bo's first night in his new home...

Bo is amazing!!!!!! He is so well-behaved and calm around the kids. When we got home, we took him for a walk because I wanted to see how he would act on a leash. He did great. It was really hot, so we didn't walk for long. When we came back in, we ate lunch, and we just let Bo walk around and explore. After lunch, we watched a movie with the kids while the baby took a nap and Bo just laid on the floor and napped, too. Sophia had gymnastics at 4:30, and I didn't want to leave Bo alone on the first day, so I just took him with us. Joshua and I walked him around outside while Sophia had gymnastics and then we went out to a horse farm to see one of my friends from high school. Bo was just perfect. He didn't chase the horses or anything. He was on a leash, but he didn't pull or anything, just stayed right beside me. He did have fun playing in a mud puddle, but we hosed him off before we got back in the van. We were watching TV before bed and I was laying on the floor and he just laid right beside me. I put up the baby gate last night and he whined a little bit, but I went back downstairs to check and he was curled up on the couch. I got up early this morning to let him out to go pee and he didn't want to come back inside, so he stayed outside for about an hour, just smelling around. He sat at the door when he wanted to come back in. So I think he had a great day. He didn't play fetch last night, but I think he was just worn out from his big day.

Barchu's Graduation

Those of you who remember Benji, who lived at our shelter for several months, will be thrilled to hear this story. Benji was adopted by Corliss West in Lexington, Kentucky.

Hello! I wanted to give you an update on Benji,(Barchu). He is wonderful! My husband and I love him so much. His name means blessing and he has been that for us. He finished his level 1 obedience training and he was the best in the class, proud parents don't brag! He has started level 2 . We are thinking he has the temperament to be a service dog for nursing homes or for sick children so we may pursue that route later on. We had the Wisdom Panel done. This is unbelievable to us! He is half Jack Russell, one quarter German Shepherd and one quarter,mutt. The G Shepherd we see, but JRT we don't see! We had a Jack for 17 years. Very interesting, anyway!

A Second Chance for Harley!

Just wanted to update you on Barney. He is now "Harley" and is a very sweet little man. He is settling in very nicely. Hasn't bothered a thing and gets along with my cat but is a bit intimidated by her. I gave him a nice bath Sunday afternoon and he let me brush him several times. However, Sunday night was a long night (first night). He kept scratching constantly. I took Monday off (I had a killer headache) and took him to the vet to see if he had a problem with all the itching. I had found a couple fleas on him and some bite marks. Dr. said he just had a flea edema and gave him a shot and some pills. Also, trimmed his toenails and cleaned his ears. Last night we both slept well. I just can't get over what a nice little fella he is. Very laid back and starting to wag his tail and eating his dog food. Wednesday he'll get neutered and also a haircut and another bath. I wanted to update you on his progress and again thank you for your time and effort. Sylvia, thank you again for giving this little man a second chance. He is definitely a lap dog and enjoys following me around the garden. He will add so much to our family.

**Just a note to some of you that might remember Harley. He was the one in isolation that was very scared, and bared his teeth at anyone that approached him wrong. If you took the time to let him come to you, he would allow you to pick him up. He loved to be held. This is why fostering is so important! Harley might not have gotten a chance if Sylvia wouldn't have taken him in and worked with him. Thank you Sylvia!

Stanley loves his new family!

Just wanted to give you an update on Milroy (now named Stanley).
Stanley is doing wonderfully! He is a much more confident dog than he was in the shelter. He is very entertaining and cracks us up often!! He is such a smart little guy and learned basic commands easily. We're looking into obedience classes because we think he would be the star pupil! :) He gets along so well with our other two dogs. They play all the time which is why he looks so worn out in these pictures! Stanley also plays very well with the cats!! And, as if all that wasn't enough, he is a world champion snuggler! We are so lucky to have met and adopted Stanley. He's the perfect addition to our household.

Some Success at Carmel PetsMart

On Saturday, June 13th, Beverly, Kendra, Libby, Leanne, and I took six dogs from our shelter to try to place into loving homes. Three of the souls were fortunate and found their forever homes. Petey, Big Girl, and Captain were all happy to leave us when their special families came to take them home. Unfortunately, Brownie, Lizzie, and Smokey came back to their kennels at the shelter for a second time, but we hope their day will come soon. At least, they had a change of scenery and lots of attention for the day. Thanks to all of you who helped with the off-site adoption. The picture is of Kendra holding Lizzie who was looking for her lucky break.

Here is another one of our shelter dogs. Buddy was surrendered because his leg was hurt and his owners couldn't afford to get it taken care of. Paw Pals sponsored him and made an appointment at the vet for him. My wife told me to pick him up because we were going to foster him while he healed. I had never seen him before. I told the receptionist that I was there to pick up Buddy, and someone went back to get him. He came trotting out as happy as could be with a look on his face like "I'm ready! Where are we going?". He hopped in the car and thoroughly enjoyed the ride home.

Buddy was our first failure as fosters (we had found homes for quite a few prior to him), and totally my fault. I told my wife he was sure he was heading to his new home, and I couldn't put him through going somewhere else. He would have easily found a home as soon as he healed. We've had him about 3 years now. He's kind of a stinker sometimes, but overall a good boy. One grooming session for him costs as much as I spend in a year for my haircuts. He loves to strut around afterward and have people compliment him. Buddy is just another example of the many wonderful pets that are waiting for you at our shelter. If you have room for a dog or cat, please come see us. I'm sure you can find a friend!

A Happy Update on Duey

Just wanted to send a quick update on Duey. Duey is doing very well. He's learning to go potty outside and knows most of the basic commands now. He's all up to date and even micro-chipped. He is not doing well in his crate when left at home, though. He just misses everyone so much! And he is quite the escape artist. He gets out if it is not securely locked. However, he does well with it at night so with a little work/patience, we know he will come around.
He has lots of doggy friends in the neighborhood and is somewhat sweet on Misty, the Italian Greyhound next door.
Banshee, our cat, and Duey get along great and play together nicely. Duey's really good in the car too. We took several long trips over the Memorial Day weekend, and Duey was a perfect gentleman on each trip. Duey is getting a doggy friend this week. We are hoping he will not be so lonely for the short periods he is home alone. Did I mention he misses us so very much when we have to leave him?
We really couldn't have asked for a better puppy in Duey. We really got lucky, and I think he feels the same way...he's giving me puppy kisses as I type. Well, take care and good luck to all those wonderful dogs that are still looking for homes.

This is just a short video of our director, Cindy Loveless speaking to the group of volunteers that showed up for our call-out today. It was a nice size crowd with a good mix of all ages. I didn't count, but there had to be at least 30 there. Thank you to all of you that came out to see us! We are still trying to organize how we are doing things, so please bear with us. Other than a few paid staff members who have way too much work to do, all of the rest of us are volunteers just like you. We're trying to figure out the best ways to help them take care of all of the homeless pets our shelter takes in. If we don't do it right, we could create more work for them. Some of you may remember Mickey that was at our shelter a few weeks ago. His new family saw him at the Wag-A-Thon. They showed up the next day an hour before the shelter opened so they would be the first to have a chance to adopt him. They were so excited that he was still available. It's a good feeling when you see people that happy to adopt a pet!

When I went to the shelter to walk dogs this afternoon, someone had left me a disc with pictures of Mickey on it. He is now Scooter and seems to be enjoying his new family and new friends. We would like to thank them for giving him such a good home!

From the Heart Comes to our Rescue Once Again!

Peggy Hodges, From the Heart Rescue director/founder, saved the day once more for the cats at Clinton County Humane Society. Peggy rescued 32 cats from our shelter on Thursday, May 28th. Peggy takes both adult cats and kittens to adopt at the Carmel PetsMart. She came just in the nick of time. Sadly, within 24 hours after she left, we received 22 more cat/kitten surrenders. With Peggy's assistance, many more cats/kittens from our shelter have been
placed in loving homes.

Budge Finds His Permanent Home After Being Rescued!

Just thought I would update you on Budge now "Buddy" - his adoption was finalized today. He was out on a trial basis over the weekend and they just loved him and couldn't part with him. It is an older couple who are regulars at the dog park with their beagle Molly ( a rescue from hurricane Katrina) . They met Buddy one day when I took him to the park and just fell in love with him. We had a good crowd of volunteers today at the shelter! It was definitely a record turnout for a Sunday afternoon. I counted around 25 of us total. We got all of the dogs walked at least once in an hour and a half. Some got walked 2 or 3 times, and didn't mind a bit! With all of the extra help, one of us was able to concentrate on taking pictures for the website, another got all of the feeding and watering done early, someone cleaned litter boxes, some cats and kittens got attention, and one person was able to take care of adoptions (2 pups were adopted) and tracked down the owners of 2 dogs that had been brought in (happy ending!).

We really do appreciate all of you that come to help us on Sunday afternoons! We may not seem too organized at times, but we're working on it. Remember, we're volunteers too. Bo's Recovery

Borax, or Bo, was operated on Tuesday for his cherry eyes. He was picked up by his foster mom on Wednesday from Frankfort Animal Hospital. Bo is enjoying recuperating in a foster home with another beagle! Bo's foster mom reports that his housetraining is going well, and he eats like a little pig- even snorts once in a while in his sleep! Let's hope this little guy finds his forever home soon!

I'm having some problems with my editing software, so these clips are very random. They still give a good idea of what went on that day. I have a few video clips left that I'm trying to put together if the software will let me. After that, I'm done with video unless someone else sends me some. This is an assortment of video clips showing the crowd and parts of the walk with the dogs through the park. It was a very windy day but we had one of the biggest turnouts we've had to date. It was hard to count people with everyone moving around, but there appeared to be around 100 total. Thank you to everyone who came out and participated! There will be a lot more video, pictures, and information coming over the next few days. We have a lot of stuff we have to sort through and edit. Check back occasionally to see if we've added anything new.

Shasta and Buster Find New Homes!

Shasta, one of Lorel's puppies, and Buster, formerly named Owen, were recently adopted by a family in Boone County. It looks like they have it made with this little girl!

Rescued!

Three of our shelter dogs were rescued Sunday! Wilma (left), Moses (right), and a cute little Yellow Lab named Cornflake (now named Cassie) who we didn't have a picture of yet. We loaded them up and went on a short road trip to meet Patty of Adopt A Lab. We are very grateful to her for taking them in! She runs a successful Lab rescue that transports many dogs to the east coast to wonderful homes. We work with quite a few dog and cat rescues, and they are all very important to us. Offsite Adoption Event

Here is a short video from the offsite adoption event at the Carmel Petsmart today. We met at the shelter at 11 a.m. to load up our vehicles with tables, chairs, crates, food and water, paperwork, and other needed supplies. We also took 8 dogs and were met at the event by one other dog that was being fostered. We were there from 1-5. The first hour went very well, with Marlo and Trixie both being adopted. After that, we had quite a few people stop and visit, but no more adoptions. All of the dogs were very well behaved, and enjoyed their day away from the shelter. We loaded everything back up and headed home. The dogs we took home needed to be walked a bit, then fed and watered and put back for the night. These events can take a lot of work, and sometimes make for a long day, but are well worth it if even one pet is adopted.

Posh is a Pro When it Comes to Learning New Tricks!

Hi Lisa and everyone,
I thought you might like to hear one success story. Here are some recent pictures of my dog, Posh. I adopted her from the Clinton County Humane Society in June 2003. She was one year old. I saw her picture on Petfinder and read her bio and I knew she was the dog I wanted.
I just wanted you to know, I still have her and she is the bright spot in my life. She loves me unconditionally.
She is so smart! Shortly after adopting her from you, I signed her up for training classes at Petsmart. She was a quick learner and she tried so hard to please me. I also taught her many tricks and she is quite the performer when company comes to visit. Her tricks are speak, roll over, beg, and she holds a treat on her nose and waits for me to say ok, then she flips it up and catches it in her mouth, and I also taught her to pray. I say "paws up" and she immediately puts her two front paws on my knees. I say pray and she tucks her head between her two front paws. I say "amen" and she looks up to get her treat. What a dog!
She goes everywhere with me in the car when cooler temperatures allow. Because she is a labrador, she loves water. When she sees a creek or a river, she dives right in almost dragging me down the creek bank with her. I wish I lived near a lake. She could swim every day.
Also, my sister and brother-in-law live on a farm in Bargersville, not far from me. On cooler summer days I let Posh run loose on the farm. I walk around the perimeter of the cornfield and Posh runs ahead. When she is a good way up the path she looks back to see me. She doesn't let me out of her sight. I taught her to sit on command and while we are walking along the path near the road, when a car is coming, I can shout to her from a distance to SIT and she immediately sits and waits for the ok continue on.
She is so devoted to me and she communicates very well. It seems she knows everything I say. "Where's your ball, Posh?" She runs across the livingroom floor, gets her ball and brings it to me to toss. Nomatter what time of day or in the wee hours of the morning, she lets me know when she has to go outside. She comes up to me and nudges my arm when she has to go out and when I say, "do you want to go outside?" She gets all excited and charges to the back door. All of the dogs I've had in the past, I always had to guess after 8 hours if they had to go outside, but not Posh, she lets me know.
I often check your shelter site to see the dogs that are available for adoption. I really like black dogs. They are so pretty. I did not realize there was a "black dog syndrome," when I adopted her. I just thought she was a pretty dog and that was that.
